A Wider Area for Wide-Area Data Services

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Riverbed Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:RVBD), the performance leader in wide-area data services (WDS), announced June 14, 2007 the expansion of global operations to Central Europe. The Riverbed Central Europe offices, located in Zurich, will be headed by Gerard Bauer, managing director for Central Europe at Riverbed®. Riverbed’s expanded presence in these markets is in response to growing recognition by distributed organizations of the importance of accelerated application performance.

“The Central European market is characterized by multi-national organizations. With branches and remote offices located worldwide and 24-hour operations, these organizations require remote office application performance that Riverbed and its award-winning Steelhead® appliances can provide,” says Bauer. “With the opening of Riverbed’s office in Zurich, we are now better able to serve our Central European customers and partners.”

Riverbed’s WDS solutions allow remote employees to collaborate as if they were local and reduce the delay and inefficiencies created by distance and time. Today, more than 2000 organizations worldwide have selected Riverbed and deployed the company’s Steelhead® appliances at sites ranging from oil rigs in the South China Seas and submarines in the Atlantic to remote offices and headquarters sites in Vladivostok, Osaka, Seoul, London and New York City. Riverbed recently released the 4.0 version of its Riverbed Optimization System (RiOS™), which is the first WDS solution to securely accelerate encrypted data transmitted via SSL without breaking the trust model.

“Centralized IT infrastructure for global operations is becoming more and more important,” said Marcus Chambers, vice president for EMEA at Riverbed. “But without a powerful and reliable WDS solution, this is very difficult to accomplish while ensuring that employees located across the country or on the other side of the world get the performance they need for their important business applications. As a result, many companies are turning to solutions from Riverbed.”

Time for a reminder on why Riverbed (RVBD) is a good Buy

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:RVBD), the performance leader in wide-area data services (WDS), announced today the results of its semi-annual customer survey conducted in March 2007; over 500 customers responded, representing 435 organizations. The results show that Riverbed’s customers are highly satisfied with Riverbed’s products and technical support. The results also reveal purchase motivations, with acceleration of applications selected by respondents as their primary motivation for purchasing Riverbed’s Steelhead® WDS appliances. Of the respondents who evaluated alternatives, more than 170, representing 130 organizations, chose Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances over Cisco’s WAAS offerings, and 155, representing 148 organizations, selected Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances over Juniper’s WX or WXC appliances.

Riverbed® conducts its customer survey twice annually. The survey looks at customer satisfaction with Riverbed’s products, technical support and professional services, customer purchase motivations, applications accelerated by Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances, other vendors considered in the purchase process and why customers chose Riverbed.

“Ease of integration and application performance are important buying criteria for organizations of all sizes who are considering WDS products,” said Zeus Kerravala, senior vice president of Enterprise Research at the Yankee Group. “Riverbed’s high customer satisfaction rate shows that the company delivers on its promise of speed, scale and simplicity.”

Customer satisfaction: 87% of the respondents gave Riverbed an overall company rating of eight or higher, on a scale of 1-10, while a full 41% of respondents gave Riverbed a perfect score of 10 out of 10. Product performance, hardware and software quality and management capabilities were all highly rated, with performance at 8.88. Riverbed’s technical support also received exceptional scores, with expertise of support engineers coming in at 8.75 out of 10.

Purchase motivations: Riverbed surveyed the customer base to track their primary and secondary purchase motivations. Nearly 80% of respondents purchased Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances to accelerate applications. The ability to reduce bandwidth costs, consolidate IT, and facilitate disaster recovery processes were also strong buying considerations. Over 70% of respondents selected IT consolidation as either a primary or secondary motivation for purchasing, while over 60% named disaster recovery as a primary or secondary motivation.

Other vendors considered: Customers who chose Riverbed, when they did consider products from other vendors, considered products from Cisco, Juniper Networks, and others.

Why Riverbed over the Competition: The top three reasons that respondents chose Riverbed over the competition were that the Steelhead appliances deliver faster and better performance, are easier to deploy and manage and offer broader support for application acceleration. Other considerations were pre-sales and support, range of features, scalability, product stability and Riverbed’s position as the market leader.

Applications Accelerated: The customers surveyed are accelerating a broad range of applications, with Windows File Sharing, Microsoft Exchange, Web-based applications (e.g., SharePoint, Web Front), MS-SQL back-end applications, custom applications, client/server business applications (e.g., Oracle, SAP), FTP, backup/replication (e.g., SnapMirror, DPM, DoubleTake), thin client, CAD and document management (e.g., Interwoven, Documentum) rounding out the list of top ten applications.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation Consolidates IT Infrastructure With Riverbed Steelhead Appliances

Improves Data Security and Reduces Operational Costs and Overhead

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:RVBD), the performance leader in wide-area data services (WDS), today announced that Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has deployed Riverbed’s Steelhead® appliances. The company has designed and is deploying a centralized file server environment that supports four offices and over 5,000 users. Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances are the core enabling technology for this initiative, which allows Mitsubishi Motors to improve data security and reliability, reduce operational costs and resources, and improve application performance.

Mitsubishi Motors became an independent company in 1970 when the automobile division was spun off from Mitsubishi Heavy-Industries, producing cars, trucks and buses for over thirty years. In 2003, the company was reborn again as the new Mitsubishi Motors, a manufacturer specialized in passenger cars. Mitsubishi Motors has 10 offices in Japan and 11 sites located outside of the country, including design centers in the United States, Australia and Germany and production centers in Thailand, the Philippines, Australia and the Netherlands.

With this project, Mitsubishi Motors centralized file servers at four sites in Japan and consolidated that infrastructure into their data center. This consolidation eliminates the need for file servers and tape backup in the remote sites, ensuring that data was more secure and significantly reducing costs and operational overhead. In order to move forward with the project, the company needed to ensure that the performance of critical applications did not suffer performance degradation. Riverbed’s reseller partner, Netmarks, recommended that the company consider Riverbed’s Steelhead appliance as a solution that would enable IT consolidation without affecting user performance.

Mitsubishi Motors selected Riverbed® over the competition because the company’s solutions delivered the best performance for the broad set of applications and protocols important to Mitsubishi Motors, including NFS. The company has implemented the Steelhead appliances at four sites in Japan with over 5,000 users, enabling Mitsubishi Motors to eliminate over 50 servers and move critical data into its protected data center. The Steelhead appliances have reduced WAN traffic by over 90%, while delivering LAN-like performance to end-users located at the remote sites.

“Accessing file servers across a WAN was thought to be impossible due to the effects of latency — regardless of how much bandwidth is available. But with Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances, we are now able to consolidate our file servers, while ensuring performance that is nearly equal to that of local area networks,” said Yasuhiro Nishikawa, Expert of IT Planning & Control Dept., Corporate Affairs Office, at Mitsubishi Motors Corp. “Installation of Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances can substantially reduce operational management costs, and centralized management can enhance security levels.

Riverbed Expands Success in Legal Market as Major Law Firms Deploy Its Steelhead Appliances

Firms Realize Improved Productivity, Better Use of Bandwidth With Riverbed's WDS Solution

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:RVBD) announced today that two law firms, Pepper Hamilton LLP and Loeb & Loeb LLP, as well as Electronic Evidence Discovery, Inc., a full-service electronic discovery company, have selected and deployed Riverbed’s Steelhead® wide-area data services (WDS) appliances in offices throughout the U.S. to accelerate the performance of applications across their networks. By using Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances to optimize the performance of applications between remote sites and make far better use of their bandwidth, all three companies have significantly improved employee efficiency and overall productivity.

Pepper Hamilton LLP Employs Steelhead Appliances to Improve Performance

Pepper Hamilton LLP, a multi-practice law firm with 450 lawyers, is headquartered in Philadelphia and has 10 other offices in seven states and Washington, D.C. The firm realized it needed to optimize its wide area network (WAN) when it decided to centralize email and document management. Previously, Pepper Hamilton had Microsoft Exchange 2003 servers at each site; now it has a consolidated, clustered Exchange environment. And instead of decentralized Docs Open for document management, it uses Interwoven FileSite, a client/server application.

Pepper Hamilton realized that adding bandwidth to its WAN would not be enough to achieve LAN-like performance. The firm conducted extensive research and found that some products were immature, some vendors were not well established, and some companies spread their resources too thin. Pepper Hamilton looked for an established company with a good reputation and experience in the legal community; the firm ultimately narrowed its choice to Riverbed® and its Steelhead appliances, and a product from another company. The IT department tested all the firm’s new centralized applications, sending documents from other sites to Philadelphia headquarters, using the Steelhead appliance at the Pittsburgh office and the other product in the Berwyn, Pennsylvania, office.

“Riverbed outperformed the competition by a factor of two in every application,” said Josette Marsh, CIO of Pepper Hamilton. “Reporting was easier with Riverbed; when we needed to get information, it was right there. The other product was more difficult to navigate. Plus, Riverbed and its channel partner, Voyant, were involved and always there to help. The other vendor was less involved, we didn’t have conversations with them, and they didn’t help us.”

Pepper Hamilton deployed Steelhead appliances in its 10 offices outside of Philadelphia in late August 2006 and quickly started seeing results. Overall network performance has improved, and the consolidation enabled by the Riverbed solution provides greater security and faster response to problems. Employees have noticed the difference that Riverbed makes, and the number of calls that come into the Helpdesk for WAN performance complaints has decreased tremendously.

Loeb & Loeb Manages Bandwidth with Steelhead Appliances

Loeb & Loeb is a multi-service national law firm with 250 attorneys headquartered in Los Angeles, with offices in New York, Chicago, and Nashville. Employees use the corporate LAN to access documents, send email, back up data, and replicate data for disaster recovery. However, the WAN was slow and data backup was bandwidth intensive, so Loeb & Loeb starting looking for a solution to its problems at the beginning of 2006.

As the firm researched solutions for improving application performance across the WAN, it soon realized that Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances had architecture and core technology that were more efficient and offered the best performance for the applications important to Loeb & Loeb. In addition, Loeb & Loeb CIO Judi Flournoy attended a conference where a peer spoke highly of Riverbed. But it was a test of Steelhead appliances that persuaded Loeb & Loeb to buy them.

“Our biggest reason for purchasing Steelhead appliances was to manage our bandwidth,” said Flournoy. “Users are saving and retrieving email and accessing applications, and backup traffic is running on top of user traffic, in the same pipe. All of this degrades performance, but with the Steelhead appliances we’ve improved performance across the network and made better use of our bandwidth.”

Since installing four Steelhead appliances in April, Loeb & Loeb has experienced a 65 percent overall reduction in bandwidth use, including a 95 percent reduction for document management and up to a 50 percent reduction when replicating data for disaster recovery. The firm now fully leverages its existing bandwidth, and staff can conduct disaster recovery backup across the WAN during the day rather than having to do it during off-peak hours at night. Employees are also more efficient. They see — and appreciate — the lower latency, which lets them transfer larger files and copies more quickly, and the network works more smoothly.

Loeb & Loeb purchased its Steelhead appliances from IT solutions provider Trace3, based in Irvine, California, which also provided training. The Steelhead appliances were easy to install and were up and running quickly, and IT has found that they are simple and easy to use.

Electronic Evidence Discovery Uncovers Riverbed’s Benefits

Electronic Evidence Discovery, Inc. (EED®) addresses the impact of electronic evidence on litigation, offering a hosted solution to support eDiscovery projects for law firms. The company’s production centers are housed at its Kirkland, Washington, headquarters and remote offices in New York City and Washington, D.C.; it also has nine sales offices.

EED manages most of its corporate electronic assets such as Word documents and Microsoft Exchange on file servers residing at its corporate headquarters, partly for security reasons and partly to avoid duplication of staff and equipment. In contrast, each EED production center has its own suite of production servers to support localized processing requirements demanded by its clients. Corporate issues associated with utilization of the WAN included up to 30-second delays opening application files from remote offices, prompting requests for dedicated servers by the affected employees. On the production front, EED wanted to share workload among resources between sites due to the varied nature of the jobs submitted through each local market. Yet, network latency made this an impractical solution for the majority of the workload. As a result, EED decided to invest in WAN optimization technologies that would benefit both the corporate and production environments across all of its locations.

“Other products we evaluated just weren’t in the same ball park as Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances,” said Tim Ryan, vice president of operations at EED. “Steelhead appliances are geared to our type of environment, where we need to move gigabytes and terabytes of data on a regular basis. Riverbed provided better price/performance and beat the competition in scalability as well; for instance, we can scale at headquarters without having to scale all our other offices. Plus, we can upgrade each new Steelhead appliance model when appropriate.”

When EED tested Steelhead appliances in April 2006, the IT staff immediately started receiving calls saying “What did you do to the network?” and “Don’t take this thing away.” Working with reseller Optimize Networks, EED deployed Steelhead appliances in its New York and Kirkland offices in late June and in its D.C. office in late October. Today, users no longer experience application performance issues, and production latency is down by 20 percent for the first copy and by 40 percent for the second. Now EED can assign staff to any project, regardless of where they are located. Employee productivity and user satisfaction have both improved. As such, Steelhead appliances are now part of EED’s operating expense model, helping the company manage growth, control costs, and ensure people are working productively.

Riverbed's Steelhead Appliance Named a Technology of the Year by InfoWorld for Third Consecutive Year

Named Best WAN Accelerator in 2005, 2006 and 2007; Technology
Recognized for Maturity, Simplicity and Speed

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 2007--Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: RVBD), the performance leader in wide-area data services (WDS), announced today that InfoWorld has named Riverbed's Steelhead(R) appliance as the Best WAN Accelerator of 2007. InfoWorld established the WAN accelerator category in 2005; Riverbed has been the winner since the inception of the category, with InfoWorld awarding the Steelhead appliance a rating of 9.0 out of a maximum of 10 for three years running. To view this year's report, please visit www.riverbed.com/infoworld.

"The annual Technology of the Year Awards highlight the best products reviewed by the InfoWorld Test Center in the past year that are defining, and often redefining, the role of IT," said Steve Fox, InfoWorld's editor in chief. "Regardless of category, innovation thrives across enterprise IT."

According to InfoWorld's Technology of the Year writeup, "perennial winner Riverbed continues to impress with expanded CIFS and NFS support in 3.0, allowing for better performance with both Windows- and NFS-based servers. QoS can now be enforced in the appliance with policies based on bandwidth and latency. Detection and correction of asymmetric routes is also a big plus."

"This award is a reflection of our real-world experience with customers," said Eric Wolford, senior vice president, marketing and business development at Riverbed. "In head-to-head competition, organizations select Riverbed(R) over the alternatives, including Cisco and Juniper, the majority of the time. We offer customers the most proven, mature solution that is simple to install and manage and provides the best performance for the broadest range of applications important to their businesses."

InfoWorld reviewed Riverbed's Steelhead appliance models 200, 5520 and 6020, plus its new release of the Riverbed Optimization System (RiOS(TM)), in October 2006. The reviewer noted that, "true to form, the company provided excellent improvements with little tweaking. Release 3 of RiOS shows a more mature product, with the focus on improving existing features, the addition of greater application support, and much increased capacity. During its time on my bench, Steelhead proved again that it is more than capable of making oversubscribed WAN circuits appear faster than they were while greatly reducing response time, besting previous releases by as much as 20 percent." Tamilnad Mercantile Bank, Ltd. Ensures Data Protection with Riverbed's Steelhead Appliances

100 MB File Replicated Between Chennai and Bangalore Every Two Minutes

San Francisco, CA — January 3, 2007 — Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: RVBD) , the performance leader in wide are data services, announced today that the Tamilnad Mercantile Bank, LTD. (TMB) has selected and deployed Riverbed’s Steelhead® wide-area data services (WDS) appliances to ensure that its critical banking transaction data is not lost should a disaster occur. TMB has deployed the Steelhead appliances in the company’s Chennai data center and in its Bangalore disaster recovery center.

TMB is a premier private sector bank headquartered in Thoothukudi, with seven regional offices and 173 branches across India. TMB was founded in 1921 and is one of the few private sector banks in India that has successfully evolved in the rapidly changing Indian banking industry. TMB has continuously recorded profits for the past 84 years.

During peak business hours, TMB generates a 100 MB log file every five minutes. To protect this critical banking transaction data, TMB replicates the files from its Chennai data center to its Bangalore disaster recovery center. Prior to installing Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances, replication of this file using Oracle’s Data Guard application took more than 10 minutes. If a disaster were to hit during peak business hours, TMB risked losing over 200 MB of data. TMB recognized this risk and sought a solution. The company considered upgrading bandwidth as a solution; however, this option was very expensive and, TMB learned, would not improve the replication time. The company turned to WDS vendors for a solution and selected Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances over the competition. In in-depth evaluations, Riverbed clearly delivered the best performance.

Following installation of the Steelhead appliances, time to replicate TMB’s banking transaction data dropped from over 10 minutes to two minutes. Data traversing the wide area network (WAN) has been reduced by over 65% and WAN utilization is down to less than 50%. Prior to installation of the Steelhead appliances, utilization was more than 90%.

“It is critical that we protect our banking transaction data,” said P.R.Varatharajan, general manager, Tamilnad Mercantile Bank. “We have designed our disaster recovery (DR) systems to ensure that we do not lose any data should disaster strike. Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances have become a critical component of our DR architecture.”

Hilton Grand Vacations Club Deploys Riverbed's Steelhead Appliances Across Its Worldwide Network

Club Improves Customer Service by Accelerating Application Performance

SAN FRANCISCO, BUSINESS WIRE -- Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:RVBD), the performance leader in wide-area data services (WDS), announced today that Hilton Grand Vacations Club, a subsidiary of Hilton Hotels, has selected and deployed Riverbed's Steelhead(R) WDS appliances to accelerate the performance of applications at its offices worldwide. Riverbed's Steelhead appliances have improved network performance and in turn, improved overall customer service by making the sales cycle more efficient. Hilton Grand Vacations Club has installed Steelhead appliances in offices in six locations to date: Orlando, Florida; New York; Las Vegas; the Big Island of Hawaii; Honolulu, and Tokyo.

Hilton Grand Vacations Club has a centralized network at its Orlando headquarters that connects to sales and resort offices around the world; these offices sell vacation ownership in resorts across the U.S. to new customers and also serve more than 100,000 existing members. While centralization has several important benefits -- the company does not need to have technical engineers at every office, for example -- the company was experiencing several challenges, including connection quality issues and latency over the wide area network (WAN). Connectivity varies from country to country; connections in U.S. offices have far more bandwidth than connections in offices in Japan, for example. In addition, Hilton Grand Vacations Club uses contract imaging to send contracts from branch offices to headquarters; these data files are very large and the time required to transfer files had an impact on productivity.

"We looked at a number of WDS products before we decided on Riverbed's Steelhead appliances," said Richard Jackson, senior director, technical operations, at Hilton Grand Vacations Club. "Gartner praised the product in its review, and a member of my team had previous positive experience with the Steelhead appliances. About seven months ago, we deployed a Steelhead appliance in Tokyo and one in Hawaii. The performance improvement was dramatic. From there the project took on a life of its own, and we now have appliances in locations all over the world."

Dramatic Improvements with Steelhead Appliances

Hilton Grand Vacations Club analyzed before and after metrics on the process of scanning contracts to find out what kind of impact Riverbed's appliance had on connectivity and latency. Contract scanning is complex; and involves imaging and OCR-based scanning, storing and indexing over a WAN connection to centralized storage. This process had been optimized for a WAN but even with the optimization pre-implementation, the process could take up to 10 minutes; with the installation of the Steelhead appliance, in many cases it takes less than one minute. CIFS file transfers that once took up to 10 minutes between Tokyo and Hawaii are now transmitted in less than five seconds.

Riverbed's Central Management Console (CMC) enables Hilton Grand Vacations to efficiently manage and troubleshoot network performance from a centralized location. Enhanced reporting capabilities allow network managers to receive detailed reports on optimized and un-optimized traffic, global trending, and global traffic breakdown. "Riverbed's CMC is a very valuable tool for us," continued Jackson. "It provides complete visibility into the WAN, from a single screen."

"The Steelhead appliances have directly improved our customer service through improving our connectivity and application performance," said Jackson. "The bottom line is that we are responsible for making sure the network is performing at its best so our customers and support staff can conduct business and do their jobs in an efficient and effective manner. We have lots of tools to help us run the network, but we've seen a real and noticeable impact on our efficiency with the Steelhead appliance, and it's now part of our standard toolkit. Staff really appreciates the improved network performance and it has had a positive impact on their day-to-day activities by speeding up essential tasks. There's a cost benefit in keeping personnel in our small sales offices happy. In addition, Riverbed has improved the corporate view of IT and what it can do for the business."

Riverbed and NetApp team up to help their customers improve remote replication and disaster recovery processes

SAN FRANCISCO -- Riverbed Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: RVBD) today announced a cooperative support agreement with Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP - message board) to help customers protect their distributed data and take full advantage of heterogeneous data centers. The cooperative support processes for Riverbed's wide-area data services (WDS) solutions with NetAppR unified storage systems, NetApp NearStoreR near-line storage systems, and NetApp V-Series virtualization systems help the two companies to better work with large enterprise customers to address customer challenges with the replication, backup, and consolidation of distributed data. Customers can now dramatically reduce the amount of data that is replicated from a corporate data center to a remote disaster recovery site with a NetApp and Riverbed solution, significantly improving recovery point objectives of a disaster recovery solution and minimizing data loss in case of disaster.

Riverbed's WDS solutions enable organizations with more than one office to overcome a host of severe problems, including poor application performance and insufficient bandwidth at remote sites. By speeding the performance of applications between distributed sites, Riverbed's award-winning SteelheadR WDS appliances enable companies to consolidate IT, improve backup and replication processes to provide data integrity, and improve staff productivity and collaboration. Steelhead appliances have been deployed in organizations ranging from the world's largest corporations with offices around the globe to small companies with a couple of sites that are just a few miles apart.

"This cooperative support agreement means that enterprise customers will benefit from enhanced protection of their distributed data," said Patrick Rogers, vice president of product and alliances at Network Appliance. "The combination of Riverbed's WDS solutions and NetApp enterprise-ready storage and data protection solutions help customers to improve remote replication and disaster recovery processes."

Riverbed Expands Operations in North America

Opens Offices in Canada to Enable Global and Regional Enterprises to Speed Application Performance and Improve Collaboration.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: RVBD) announced today the launch of operations in Canada with the opening of offices in Toronto, Ontario. Riverbed's new Canadian office will allow Riverbed® to best meet the needs of distributed organizations throughout Canada as they seek to solve the problems associated with application performance over wide area networks (WANs).

“Riverbed’s first customer was a Canadian company,” said Jerry Kennelly, CEO and president of Riverbed. “Riverbed’s decision to expand operations in North America is driven by customer and partner demand, as organizations recognize the importance of optimizing WAN performance for a broad range of applications and services, including IT consolidation, backup and disaster recovery, and application acceleration. We look forward to working with our Canadian partners to meet the needs of distributed enterprises.”

Riverbed has developed relationships with leading reseller partners across Canada, including British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec. As part of this release, Riverbed is announcing Canadian customers SECOR and Wardrop Engineering, both of which worked with partners to deploy Riverbed’s Steelhead® appliances.

SECOR was founded in 1975 and today is the largest independent strategy consulting firm in Canada, serving prestigious clients in North America and Europe. In addition to its Montreal offices, the company has operations in Paris and Toronto. The company is organized into three groups: SECOR Consulting assists top teams of large North American companies with strategic and global expansion concerns; SECOR Europe focuses on top teams of European companies; and SECOR-TAKTIK specializes in mid-sized Quebec companies that must constantly adapt to the changing realities of the market.

SECOR deployed a Microsoft SharePoint Intranet to enable collaboration between its three sites, including the ability to quickly and easily share large PowerPoint and Word documents. However, downloads of typical files of 25-30 MB often took 10-12 minutes to open and file replication was nearly impossible. The company turned to Montreal-based NOVIPRO for a solution. NOVIPRO is a rapidly growing company and registered Riverbed reseller that has, since 1993, successfully implemented IT projects for small, medium and large sized businesses. NOVIPRO has developed a unique approach that capitalizes on the skills of its team to address its clients' challenges in areas that include technological infrastructure design, software solutions, IT recovery, archiving and other IT issues. NOVIPRO recommended that SECOR consider Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances to enable collaboration between the company’s North American and European sites. Following installation of the Steelhead appliances, the same files that once took 10-12 minutes to download now take 10-12 seconds.

“Riverbed has delivered performance beyond our expectations,” said Joanne Couture, Director – Service to Professionals at SECOR. “Our users in Paris are now working as if they were in Montreal. Riverbed has delivered LAN-like quality over our WAN.”

In addition to improving application performance, the Steelhead appliances have reduced the amount of traffic traversing the network from 1.34 GB to 291 MB, a 5X decrease, freeing bandwidth and allowing the company to delay a bandwidth upgrade indefinitely.

Wardrop Engineering has also deployed Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances. Wardrop is an award-winning international consulting firm providing innovative solutions through integrated multi-disciplined engineering, environmental, and information technology services. The company has a team of more than 850 from which to draw expertise, and was recently named, for the fifth time, to the list of Canada’s Top 100 Employers. Wardrop specializes in the forest products, infrastructure, product development, mining and minerals, nuclear, oil and gas, and power sectors.

Wardrop has sites across Canada and in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Teams often work collaboratively, transferring a variety of documents, including very large computer-aided design (CAD) files, across the country. In addition, Wardrop has a centralized Oracle-based financial and project management application, located in its Winnipeg office. With a hybrid network that includes centralized, regional and local IT, the company needed a flexible solution that would allow them to speed both the transfers of files and access to its centralized database, while accommodating the design of its network. Wardrop attempted to overcome its performance issues across the WAN with raw bandwidth; however, performance was still unacceptable.

Working closely with Gibraltar Solutions, a registered Riverbed reseller and value-added solution provider, the company deployed Riverbed’s Steelhead appliances as a solution. Gibraltar Solutions optimizes large enterprise IT environments, with compelling value, in the areas of infrastructure consolidation, virtualization solutions, access solutions, application distribution, security assessment/operations, as well as process/project management. To-date, Wardrop has deployed Steelhead appliances at 12 sites across Canada and in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“Riverbed accommodates the flexible nature of our business where project teams are based in different parts of the country,” said Bill Ip, CIO at Wardrop. “In smaller offices, we have been able to reduce the number of email and file data servers. Employees remotely work as if local. Having the Steelhead appliances deployed at all of our sites gives us the flexibility to allow all employees access to all data, regardless of location.”

Wardrop has also reduced bandwidth usage by up to 5X, allowing the company to reduce its current expenditure on bandwidth and delay future network upgrades.

“Users are now able to efficiently and quickly get data from other offices,” continued Ip. “With the Riverbed-enabled performance, remote users are not even aware that they are accessing files over the WAN. Based on the performance, they assume that they are opening local files.”
